While the Rainbow Lorikeet is the most famous of its kind, it is part of a much larger family of lorikeets. In fact, there are approximately 53 species of lorikeets and lories spread throughout the Indo-Pacific region. These species vary in size, coloration, and habitat, but they all share one key feature: their specially adapted brush-tipped tongues, perfect for feeding on nectar and pollen.

Among this family, the Rainbow Lorikeet stands out not only for its bright colors but also for its widespread distribution and the ease with which it interacts with people. Other lorikeet species, such as the Red-collared Lorikeet and the Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, are also found in Australia, but none have the widespread fame of the Rainbow Lorikeet.
